Rocky hyderabad, no more
A couple of weeks back, during my visit to Hyderabad, I marvelled at the superb roads that were being laid out. Wide and spacious with proper service roads and exits, I mentioned to the taxi driver that with a little touch-up here and there, it would soon look like the foreign locations. He nodded in agreement and said yes, just a matter of time.
Hyderabad, by nature, is a rocky territory. Construction is not easy. But the modern equipments help in getting the job done quickly. The pace with which the buildings spring up and become functional is sheer amazing.
The drive from airport to my office is about an hour long and this gave me enough time to reflect on the development. It is not only the roads which were being developed. Huge buildings and campuses were coming up on both sides as well, and indicating the prosperous times. As most people would be, and I was not able to decide on which side I was. OK, so I am assuming here that there are indeed two sides. One which wants these developments and other which does not. Why would anyone not want these? Well, I although several reasons may exist, I am taking into account the destruction that usually follows such developments. The blowing up of terrain to achieve the proper leveling and landscaping for the buildings is very much necessary if you want to be building up at such a huge magnitude. Also, to do it economically, would definitely be a challenge if not.
So would I want the rough, natural layout where, about a decade ago, we could see peacocks and other animals roaming about freely, or could I want the buildings and the super fast roads? I don't think there is a choice, like it or not, there is a need for the buildings. I only hope that there is some planning behind all these buildings that are coming up.
Rocks carved on both sides of the road is a common sight. |
