adieu 2009

Last day of the year. It is dec 31st and the last post is only a good bye to 2009. Finally, I post in dec too! Bye bye 2009.  As with most other years, it was a good year! :) had somewhere around 31,556,926 seconds . Wonder how many seconds I wasted and how many were good moments. Do I remember all of them? Am sure not. So again good bye as 31 Dec 2009 ticks away and need to get used to 2010 on the calender. Have office tomorrow. Yeah, its a working day!

Kids are born with tech knowhow

Have you noticed how the new generation is able to pick up the available technology like they were born with the know how? I have always wondered at my daughter being able to deftly weld the mouse, while I remember struggling to get the co-ordination going when I started off. I remember my father's comments on the same topic when I was a kid. I had heard him saying that he was struck by how I was so quickly able to pick up the operations of the TV, VCR or the lift, whereas he has some reservations. He has all but given up operating the mobile and constantly asks my mom to handle the mobile :) Am I getting old? Or is it that now that I am mature I hesitate thinking that I may damage the costly stuff? Whatever it may be, it is a wonder how quickly and naturally my daughter, her cousins and their generation has absorbed the usage of all the technology around them. Be it computers, mobiles, gaming console any thing at all. A few minutes tinkering with the stuff and they are experts

The wave experiment that didn't work

Image
Yesterday I was trying out Google wave after letting it sit idle for some time and tried to blog from the wave interface. If you would have seen the wave demo video, it shows a cool integration of the wave with the blog. The product managers who were demoing the product coolly added some photos into the wave the created added a few friends from their contacts and viola it was shared with those friends. Continuing the demo, the wanted to publish the content onto a blog and just added the appropriate robot onto the screen and again Viola! the content got published to the blog. So I too did the same, but no magic happened for me. The wave is still there on my interface.. have a look here.... Expecting the content to publish, I of course, wrote accordingly. So would this be a blog in a blog??!! Some of the other stuff on the google wave is simply amazing. But it will need more time and lot more members to make it a success.

Two years since the Hajj trip

WOW! 2 years have flown past so very quickly! And I so very much, miss not being there. My bro-in-laws’, two for them,  would be at arafa today God willing. I am very happy for them. It had been one of the greatest moments of my life to have been on this journey. Hope to go back sometime again God willing. Some of the photos from the last trip is shared here. Hajj Trip dec 2007

My contribution to a world record :)

Image
A few weeks prior to june 2008, there was a lot of discussion and support gathering for the attempt at a world record. The record was for a category that did not exist till then. "largest number of software downloads in 24 hours". That was the category that Mozilla was trying to aim and create with the Guinness folks. June 17, 2008 was set as the download day and all the members associated with mozilla, open source, etc started to raise the awareness with the Spread Firefox  campaign. There were a total of 489,596 that were recorded that day from India . I remember going around office and reminding my friends to start of the downloads. On July 2nd, we got the confirmation  that the Guinness World Record had been official. A total of 8,002,530 people downloaded firefox3 in 24 hours. As an appreciation, mozilla let us have a virtual certificate :). All who had pre-registered were sent a mail. Only the link was sent and we had to enter the name online to generate the cert

State to 'spy' on citizens in UK.

All telecoms companies and internet service providers will be required by law to keep a record of every customer’s personal communications, showing who they have contacted, when and where, as well as the websites they have visited. ...... They will not require the permission of a judge or a magistrate to obtain the information, but simply the authorisation of a senior police officer or the equivalent of a deputy head of department at a local authority. Read more here ... State to 'spy' on every phone call, email and web search This is indeed going to be interesting to see how this item works out. I had thought that they already had mechanisms like this in place. If not completely like the news details, at least there are enough measures to find out enough about someone's criminal activity. Having systems like the one described is only going to be used to target the general public than the minority who indulge in unscrupulous activity.

Net identity

Isn't it cool that you can now use your facebook or google id on most sites to authenticate yourself. I remember the earlier days when one had to create a user account in the specific site to download or even write comments. These days there are many authentication services available and most sites don't need their own. This is wonderful :) . Not only saves on remembering all those username/password, but also does help in maintaining an identity. I had earlier scribbled about it here in part.. Social Networking- what a vast space! , but the more I use it, more I like the concept. I just wish they don't go overboard with all of them trying to create a "unique" "single" authentication mechanism. My 2cents for the guys, it wouldn't be so unique or single if all of you create one each, would it? Standardize please!

Reading the printed words

I was a late reader in our family. I started to read books when I was in seventh standard. My sisters, both avid readers, started off when they were in third or fourth. Because of their enthusiasm in reading, I had quite a collection of comics and books at home by the time I had my senses. The love for books is a common factor in our family. I cannot remember a time where books were not around in my home. We used to have all sorts of discussions on books. My ma and pa always encouraged us in this, yet I was pretty late. I used to love the books with pictures when I was little. I would turn the pages of these comics and come up with my own stories, ignoring the print completely. This was more to do with my difficulty in reading. I had trouble reading words and sentences. I remember my classmates reading very fluently where as I could only stammer through the lines. Was I put off? Nope. I was in a world of my own and these things didn't bother me at all. But by the time I was in

How fast time flies

I have been trying to get a few snaps of my kids together. The problem is to get them in front of the camera. They want to be behind it! Every shot I take, they are on their toes trying to get to me to see how the photo came out. :) I just cannot get them to sit and pose. It was not like this with my elder one. A couple of years back, she would pose for the photos and would be really interested to be clicked. She was not concious of the camera and so taking the photos and videos were very easy compared to now. I like to take snaps and keep them. Not as to display, but it feels nice to take these snaps out and view them. It feels very nice to see the old snaps, of my parents and grand parents. I hope some day others will look at these snaps and enjoy them. Thats where I appreciate the digital world. So easy to store and share. It seems like so many years ago and yet just like yesterday. I am sure my parents would feel that same about me and my siblings. In fact, I am sure I have h

The Hindu : International : Israel depriving Palestinians of water, says Amnesty It says that Israel uses more than 80 per cent of water drawn from the aquifer and while the Jewish state has other water sources, the aquifer is the West Bank’s sole supply of water. As a result, the 450,000 Israelis who live in the West Bank and east Jerusalem use more water than the 2.3 million Palestinian residents, said Amnesty. Nodding in consent or otherwise

Yesterday, my elder daughter was trying to teach my younger one the correct way to nod. The younger cannot talk yet, but relies on nodding her head to indicate yes or no. Now, the confusing part could be the direction of her nodding. And this is what the elder was trying to correct. I have worked with quite a few Dutch colleagues, who on visiting india are always confused on what the Indian means by the head nod. There is at least one guaranteed discussion on this. It seems from this post that even we Indian's are not in agreement with what exactly it means :) -  Nodding and Shaking and India I will not even begin to clarify what the correct "Indian" way is. Purely because I do not think that there is a single "Indian" way. People from different places, from India, make different styles. Some individuals even have a bharathnatyam style when they indicate yes/no and then we need to tell our confused Dutch colleague that this was NOT again to be confused with

Internet in our lives

Sometimes we get carried away by whatever we are doing or what circumstances we are in that we assume that all the people in the world are in that very state of mind. We forget that circumstances and the associated choices are different for each and every person. As I write this piece, I am pulled into thinking about the darker shade of life that exists in the world. But for my own moods sake, I will ignore that for contemplation at a later time. The reason for this line of thought, is my excitement in finding the various tools and possibilities in the internet era. I was so immersed in all the stuff around that I felt everyone was in the same page. It sure helped when I was able to add a comment on my friends facebook wall and pat, get a reply. Or when I would forget my password for an application, just click on the “forgot password” link and had the password sent into my mailbox in under a minute! Or have help or tutorials found for problems I was stuck with within 10 minutes. Oh t

Outing to Beach - 19th Oct 09

Image
This weekend has been the last of a set of long weekends.  We had off days either on a monday or a friday since end of September. I was called in or had some pending work in all of the other weekends and so it these weekends were not very great for me. As a matter of fact, I was cribbing a lot since I was not getting to enjoy the days "off". So I decided that this was going to be the one I enjoyed. Thankfully, I was to spend only about 3 hours in office. All the rest of the time I had to myself and family. To finish off the weekend, my family decided that we would go off on an outing. The unanimous destination being the panambur beach at Mangalore. My elder daughter loves to play in water. Be it beach or the swimming pool, the touch part is to get her out :) The beach was relatively free when we entered in and got ourselves settled. People started to move in a bit later, but still the crowd was not as much as it was on our earlier visits. Here are some photos that we

out to buy fish - mobile blog

It is getting hot by the day here. I am going out to get fish. Nope not to buy raw fish or to catch fish ;) but to buy fish fry from narayana's hotel. This is an old joint in mangalore which is very famous for its fried fish. Even posh hotels are said to have this item on their menu. I have heard that even the Taj at mangalore has it. And the menu item is not prepared the narayana way. Instead, these hotels buy it from Narayana's and sell at a higher rate. Why not go to Narayana's and have it? Well, i mentioned that the place was old, didn't i? I should also add that it is a place which may not suit the delicate tastes of a posh audience. It is situated near the harbour and has the fisheries smell till the good old olfactory adaptation does not kick in. Also, the place even though so famous, is no more than a shack, serving rice and fish. Talk about specialization! Well I am travelling in an auto so got some time to tap in these words. Live in action. ;) While try

Social Networking- what a vast space!

Today spent a lot of time, about 16 hrs and more, on going through the internet and exploring social networking. Phew! There are so many sites and applications that have come up that contribute to this phenomenon called social networking. Just to name a few, MySpace , Orkut , Hi5 , Facebook , Friendster , LinkedIn , Twitter ...... And the list goes on. Have a look at List of social networking websites to get an idea of the HUGE number of sites that are available and the different categories they cater to. It is so easy to get lost among the plethora of web sites and applications. Every now and then, I get a mail from an acquaintance, inviting me to this new cool site that he or she has created an account on and which will help us keep in touch with each other. Of this list here are My Favs: LinkedIn - Caters to professional connections. Facebook and Orkut - My friends are spread across these two networking sites. Twitter - lets me broadcast myself to all ;) I never used

"Indianness"

It almost feels like Déjà vu! I lose count on how many times I have come across the debate on forums, mail chains, bulletin boards and of course in groups of people, when ever there is an "Indian" being awarded or recognized. That guy may not have stepped on Indian soil at all, but that does not stop us from arguing if he/she is an Indian or not and to claim the prize as our own! The latest set of debate was triggered when the Nobel price for Chemistry was awarded to Venkatraman Ramakrishnan. I seriously do not understand the urge that people have to say be proud because they are Indian. I mean, I am proud enough about other things that India is about. I am ashamed at some things like corruption and all. But what do they mean to say there is something wrong if I don't feel proud that Swaraj Paul or Zubin Meheta or Laxhmi Mittal is of Indian Origin. Heck! I am not even thinking in that angle. We have a local language paper, Malayalam Manorama, which is known to search

land dispute and absurd objections

Can you believe that? China has objections over India's Prime Minister visiting one of India's states. Well, China claims that Arunachal Pradesh is part of China and India has no right being there. Seems we needed to remind China that is not the case Arunachal an integral part of India: Nirupama Rao . They call it disputed area. Whats the dispute? Don't they have enough land? Do the people of Arunachal want to join China? China waited till the eve of the elections to cry out loud. So the people of the land themselves have given a kind of verdict. There was a huge turnout in the elections ‘Vote for India’ rebuff to China . Obama and the Nobel prize

The Obama and Nobel prize scene just does not leave me. I am compelled to read the numerous articles on this topic which I find quite interesting. It is interesting because, Most of the comments on twitter and other sites/blogs(including me) say that he did not deserve it yet. He would have been in office barely for 3 weeks when the nomination deadline would have closed. So how did he get into the list of nominees anyway? He could not have done any peace work by then! It gets more interesting because, the world leaders who are opposed to the US of A have applauded the award. Americans(basically who did not vote for him and his political opponents) are voicing their opinion against it as if it were his fault that he got awarded. This article gives a view of the committee members view on why they chose Obama for the peace price - Nobel jury speaks out in defense of Obama prize "Alfred Nobel wrote that the prize should go to the person who has contributed most to the deve

Traffic: Road rulez

Is it not really irritating when you see people driving down one way streets the wrong way? When people don't bother with the traffic signals. Oh it does irritate the heck out of me! Especially, when I am returning from a hectic day at work. And in Mangalore, I find people having a penchant for ignoring signals and following one ways, the wrong way. Today was especially irritating. I was waiting at a signal(the first in line) for the light to change to green and the car behind me is honking away to glory. As if I am doing my personal business in the middle of the road! The signal turns green and I go a little further to turn into my lane and I find a truck trying to come opposite to me in the one way street. That did it!     I just stopped my car right in front of the truck and did not budge. The driver and the cleaner stare at me.     I stare right back! He says something I cannot make out.     I say somethings that I am sure he cannot even hear. He reverses and turns b

Obama emails, about Nobel - News-The Economic Times

Obama emails Delhi lawyer, a Harvard classmate, about Nobel - ET Cetera-News By Industry-News-The Economic Times : "'This morning, Michelle (wife) and I awoke to some surprising and humbling news. '...To be honest, I do not feel that I deserve to be in the company of so many of the transformative figures who've been honoured by this prize -- men and women who've inspired me and inspired the entire world through their courageous pursuit of peace,' Obama wrote in the email to Singh." He must be a very down to earth person, but still the committee was not correct to award him. Yet.

BBC NEWS | South Asia | Pakistan match fixing is denied

BBC NEWS | South Asia | Pakistan match fixing is denied : A committee of Pakistan's parliament has summoned the country's cricket captain, coach and manager to discuss new match fixing allegations. "'The nation wants to know how the team lost to Australia,' Jamshed Khan Dasti, chairman of the parliamentary committee, told the BBC. Pakistani cricket has recently been free of match fixing claims He argued that Pakistan deliberately lost in the last group match to prevent India from reaching the semi-finals. Mr Dasti's committee has summoned coach Intikhab Alam, captain Younis Khan and Pakistan Cricket Board champion Ijaz Butt to a meeting on 13 October to clarify the allegations." You have got to be kidding me!!! Aren't there other things in Pakistan that need to be fixed!

Dishum dishum movies

The stunts in these Bollywood movies and Malayalam movies are so very absurd. I somehow like the Tamil movie stunts better. They are atrocious but are good mostly with all the exaggerated actions and stunt sequences. The former ones are neither believable nor over exaggerated. This in between state is really not very great.

Movies I repeat watch

I have a collection of movies that I don't mind watching when I am bored. Let me try to recall some of the movies that I don't mind watching again and again. There are so many of them and I whenever I am bored, I love to watch scenes of these movies. Kung Fu Panda - I love this movie. There are so many wise words this movie has especially the comments that the wise master oogway makes. Oh just writing about it makes me want to watch it again. "Quit, don't quit. Noodles, don't noodles" Ocean's Series - The style with which this movie has been taken is amazing. So many actors and characters that are to be portrayed. There are Bourne Series - These are an awesome set of movies. I love to watch action/spy movies but this series gives it a real good angle and touch. The script has deviated from the book, but is very very well written to make it a good movie watch. Shrek 1 - The sequels of the Shrek series are not so great. The first was the best a

Camera near! Left right and center.

Image
There is an explosion of cameras. What with all the mobile phones having these built in. All around, even if it is shopping malls, theaters, roads anywhere you go you see camera's clicking :) I remember a time when people with camera were much sought after in school or college trips and functions. Now a days its video clips and 5 MB minimum camera with anyone around. Looking for mobiles without camera? Best of luck! There are so few mobiles (other than of course the base models) that come without camera. Look for a phone without cam but with mp3 feature and you know what I am taking of. There was only M600 a year back which was of this category. I don't see any models coming up too. It just is not business sense I guess when people are looking out for mobiles with higher MB camera's. One more reason, to keep your smile on always. Don't know which camera is clicking you.

Time flies

Image
It has been four years and more since I became a father. Along the way there are so many memories that I thought I would never forget. As we get busy with our daily lives, these memories are shelved somewhere at the back of my mind. It was the next time that I became a parent, and went through a Déjà vu that all those shelved memories come back. I am so thankful to God to having blessed me with my family. I was just going though some of my older photos and realized yet again that time does fly.

Ramadan Kareem

Image
It is the month of Ramadan. The holiest month in the islamic calendar. The most prominent act during this month is that muslims around the world fast from the the first call all prayer at the break of day to the fourth prayer at the setting of the sun. Ramadan is overall a month where the believer gets closer to the almightly through acts of charity, reading quran, prayer and overall focusing on bringing a better spiritual quality to ones life. Well all these can also be done in all the other months, but these acts are intensified during the holy month. It is said that the doors of hell are closed during the month of Ramadan. Today it is Ramadan 03, 1430 on the islamic calendar. May God bless all and lead us on the straight way. Ameen. Image Courtesy : by Ranoush on flickr

Detaining King Khan Vs APJ incident

Image
Was King Khan detained on purpose? Was it a regular screening or a "regular" screening? Well as far as names go it is common knowledge that names similar to that of wanted men are screened more rigorously that others. Having a muslim name does not help in this context because I guess about half the names on the US wanted list. if not more, would be from mid-east or other muslim countries. Anyways, the topic I had in mind was the detaining of SRK and not names. So let me try and stick to the topic :) The first time I heard or read of this news was here - SRK detained . The article itself was quite judgmental. I myself was not sure if this was a publicity stunt for his upcoming movie, My name is Khan. Or real. So much for faith in actors :) I was really annoyed when I had read about the screening of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam . What is the difference between the two cases? First of APJ is one of the best loved Ex Presidents of India. Second, the incident of APJ took place before the f

New theme for the site -

Image
The entire day today, I was experimenting with some of the themes that I found on the internet. I liked the WordPress sites and their look and feel, so thought I would try to get some theme like the ones on the WordPress blogs. I was even tempted to move over to the WordPress site because of the themes, then decided not to. Nothing against WordPress, (quite the contrary judging by the time I spent on the site) but I just wanted to stick to blogger. There's an old saying about a man and his blaming the tools when things didn't weren't working out. So thought that I would work on my blogging/writing "skills" and see where it goes before making an "informed" choice on the site. ;) Incidentally, there are sites that specialize in converting the WordPress themes to blogger compatible and vice versa. The best ones I found on wpbloggerthemes wordpresstoblogger deluxetemplates Found so many wonderful themes that it was difficult to decide which one to settle on

No linux version for chrome?

Image
Well well. there is no linux version for Google Chrome! So much for the Windows killer comments!!! These are some of the things that I find pretty Hypocritical, if i may use this term. On a related note: All through the internet forums or blogs you can find people bashing up Microsoft and Redmond. Tearing them apart for the alleged or otherwise (mal)practices. However, none of them make even a whimper when other groups do the same tactics that Redmond once did or continues to do. I don't agree to some of what Microsoft is doing, but lets give credit where credit is due and slime where slime is due. Lets not hold back just coz its not our favorite punching bag.

Legacy hardware

Image
I upgraded my desktop recently and found that there was a problem in connecting all my existing hardware to the new motherboard. In recent times, the preferred protocol for connecting devices shifted to SATA. So when I upgraded and got the new motherboard, there was a shortage in connecting my multiple IDE devices. I had 2 HDD and 2 DVD drives which needed the IDE connector. A choice had to be made and I gave off one of my existing DVD drives right at the vendor place where I was upgrading. Now the trade-off in selling the IDE HDD(80Gb, 160GB) was not great so I decided to retain them for the time being. Now the issue was that I had two HDD and one DVD drive which needed to be connected where as only one IDE cable. Well, after the upgrade, I have to constantly leave the tower open, and connect (and restart) the machine whenever I need to use the DVD drive. So until I decide to upgrade my HDDs and DVDs to SATA, my computer is like the snap shown. Hope my machine doesn't go completel

Running on ubuntu 9.04

Image
WOW! I had been trying to use Ubuntu or some version of Linux for some time now and have not been able to make the switch. And now, for the past few weeks, I have been running on Ubuntu at home. How did it happen? A lightening strike! No, No quite literally a lightening strike. Let me explain. Like many homes now days, we too, have a desktop and laptop. Both were running on Windows XP. A couple of months back, the performance of our laptop started to degradem and I thought it was time for a re-install. So I started off with the Windows installation, which I must say is pretty straightforward. Well, straight forward, provided the CD/DVD drive works. As in my case, the installation stopped half way through as the CD could not be read. This left me in a lurch. I now had a laptop but no OS installed on it. The windows re-install had aborted in the middle which left the system unusable. The alternatives at this point were to Contact the support center. Replace the DVD drive Try and bo

tehran times : Israel is committing a holocaust in Gaza: Norman Finkelstein

Recently I happened to chance across an article on Israel's Gaza offensive. Here the author is likening the behaviour of Israel to Nazi Germany. Interesting article. Commuting to work

I have a long distance travel to my office daily. The distance a little more than 25 km in one direction. So I end up driving more than 50 km a day. The company does provide bus service to and from, but I don't use it. Why? Isn't it good? It is not a question of the service being good or bad. It is a matter of comfort and choice. Travelling on my own vehicle gives me the option of chosing when to travel or make any last minute changes in plan.  The good thing is that some of my team mates give me company everyday that I am thankful for that. Some days we have very good conversations going which would not have been possible during office hours because of the work itself.

A trip to Big Bazaar

I went with my family to shop in Big Bazaar today. We tend to avoid Big Bazaar because of the crowd and ambiance. Whats wrong with the ambiance? Well ! When you think of it, nothing unexpected. You see they make it very clear in the name itself that you should be expecting a bazaar. It is really noisy and crowded. Not just the typical Indian style bazaar. Here they use microphones to rant out a steady flow of announcements/offers. And that too not just one announcement at a time. There are multiple people who would be making the announcements. So you can imagine the amount of noise. Couple that with the chitchat and discussions of the shoppers, the background music and the cyclic advertisements on the television sets hung up from the ceilings.... The first time I had the "Big Bazaar" experience was at Hyderabad. There were people shouting out the offers using megaphones. My wife, my sister-in-law, my kid all of us were shaky after the crowded and noisy experience. We found th

Parking at the apartment

Image
When I moved to Mangalore, I looked for an apartment which was decent and had a reserved parking space. Yes, I specifically looked for reserved parking. I did not want to go around looking for parking space after a hard days work. And I got just such an apartment. However, recently I have been having quite a bit of trouble with the car parking at my apartment. Even though the parking is reserved for me, I have been finding some other car parked at my space. Why? It seems that some owners did not pay up for separate car parking and hence do not have reserved parking. So they just park it at any place they want. They can see that it is marked for use by another flat number, however this does not bother them. They, and their guests, just feels free to park where ever the heck they want! Why do people just think "me! me! me!"? Can they not be considerate enough to think about others? Will we not change? I find very few incidents where I find someone acting considerately to their

Intrepid Ibex

While I was away... (I was out of touch for a long time from the linux world) there was another release of Ubuntu. It is named Intrepid Ibex . This version was released in October '08. Hope to be catching up with this soon. Or should I be sticking to Heron? Heron will be supported for longer. Hmm, if I don't find something seriously interesting in Ibex, I think I will just go with Heron. So whats Intrepid? –adjective resolutely fearless; dauntless: an intrepid explorer . and what's an Ibex? n.   pl. ibex or i·bex·es  Any of several wild goats of the genus Capra, especially C. ibex, native to mountainous regions of Eurasia and northern Africa and having long, ridged, backward-curving horns. -- definitions from dictionary.com You can find more about the Ubuntu releases at the Wikipedia link .

Back to Blogs ...

My last post was ... quite long ago. I actually do not remember when it was last that I posted something. This attempt at writing blogs will be an attempt to get regular. I hope I can put up something here each week. Today I merged some posts from my linux related blog to this one. As is the case with this blog, I have not been regular with the other blog too. I am giving up on trying to maintain a seperate blog for linux.  There are two reasons for this. Firstly, I do not think I am going to be regular at two blogs. Second and more importantly, I am not a core linux guy. I love to try out new operating systems and new technologies what ever they be. So I am going to try and put all my blogs in one place. The last I blogged, I just checked the timelines, seems to be in end of 2007. There has been a lot of things happening in my life since then. I hope I can cover some of these too in the blogs to come. Until the next one....  May God bless you.
